Salah Salahudin from Intercol-Nokai team stole the limelight in the Mini Challenge, the region’s only one make car series, which were held during the Series Finale of the GP2 Festival weekend at the Bahrain International Circuit on the 29th and 30th of September by speeding to victory in Race one of the series held at the Bahrain International Circuit BIC.

In the first race of the Ten-round challenge, organised by Euro Motors – the exclusive importer for MINI in the Kingdom - Salahudin finished ahead of Ali Aryan of AlAreen Desert Resort Spa team and Castrol’s Ali Al-Kobaisi, who finished in second and third places respectively.

“The race was a tightly contested affair with only seconds between the top three,” said Salahudin. “It was a really good result for me and the team and it puts us in a good position for the rest of the championship.”

In the second race,Talal Al –Ghaith from the Unstoppabulls took the lead in the MIN cooper, GP2 support race in 19 minutes 47.135 seconds followed closely by Salah Salahudin from Intercol-Nokia team with a 0.842 time gap. Meanwhile, Ali AlKobaisi help on to his third position for the second consecutive day.

I would like to thank my team the MTC Unstoppabulls for their support and especially Fahad Al-Musallam, a great mentor whose foot steps I would like to follow and achieve the MINI Championship for this year.’’ Commented Talal AlGhaith.

The MINI Challenge, which is organised by Euro Motors, was one of two support races at the GP2 Festival Weekend, which saw some of Europe’s finest drivers and car makers battle it out in a spectacular end-of-year celebration for the well reputed international race series.

Euro Motors, the exclusive importer of BMW and MINI in the Kingdom, agreed to support the festival in an effort to give aspiring Bahraini racing drivers an unrivalled opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in a safe and controlled environment while enjoying the thrills and excitement of competition racing.

The MINI Challenge races were held in conjunction with the Bahrain Motor Federation. They featured 9 Mini Cooper Club Sport cars, each sponsored by local companies, with identical specifications and engine capacity. The drivers battled it out in two 10 lap circuit sprint races.

History of the ‘MINI Challenge’

Back in the hay days of motor racing, in the 50’s and 60’s, many privately owned Cooper racing cars competing in Formula One were driven by self-funded independents knows as “privateers”.

The late John Cooper, racer and owner of Cooper Car Company which later became the John Cooper Works brand name and company worked in the mid 50’s to develop this concept and take it further into the future.

He created with his team the rear-engine Formula 2 car with a large 2-liter engine. The Cooper Car Company won consecutive F1 Constructors World Championships in 1959 and 1960 with drivers, Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren.

In the 60’s and 70’s privateers were racing with MINI Coopers designed by John Cooper Works. From there the work continued and in the 1990’s John Cooper Works was asked to work on the new MINI project, which would ultimately replace the classic car and carry the Cooper brand into the Millennium. John Cooper Works decided to commence work on production of an engine conversion and chassis enhancements for the new MINI Cooper.

Michael Cooper conceived the idea of the ‘MINI Challenge’ in memory of his father John, a one-make challenge series placing the Cooper name firmly back on the motor sport calendar.
